about
I wrote this song in my backyard in Chicago one warm summer evening in 2007. I was thinking about media hype, how it controls us, and how it can dictate our thinking so easily. It's about the way we sometimes perceive things that should be significant to us as unimportant or belittle their worth, and vice versa. It's a commentary on ignorance to a point... I have a pretty selective memory, but I remember looking in the eastern night sky and thinking how remarkable its color was. Hence, the beginning of the song and its introductory lyrics. It all kind of flew out from there. This song was finished within a half hour or so. Those are the best kinds of songs to me. They are the most honest.
lyrics
Reading the violet sky
Is this the beginning or the end?
Is it the 4th of July or terror reigning?
The calendar flips itself
Discard the bread ends
As the rivers run dry we complain about being older
I guess it's fine
To live a sheltered life and
You tell me lies
Just keep me safe and content
And I swear I won't mind
Check out line conspiracies
New pictures of a young lady
She's loosing her mind
Feel free to criticize
Ever so treacherous chore
Gather rations from your grocery store
But you'd be rabid too if
You couldn't step through the door
And it's too late to feel that bad
Those are feelings
I never had
You can tuck in safe tonight
Cause it's only thunder
And the spell that you're under
It'll all be all
All be alright.
